Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa (Lisbon ZOO/LZ) is a Private, Non-Profit Institution of Public and Educational Utility whose mission is to act as a Species Conservation Center through research and animal welfare techniques, working for its reintroduction in the natural habitat, through Conservation Education. LZ works closely with European and global partners, defining action strategies to fulfill its mission, highlighting the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA), the International Zoos Educators (IZE), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and the European Association of Aquatic Mammals (EAAM). With an active role in ex situ and in situ conservation LZ plays a predominant role in ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION through educational contents in the facilities and specific programs for the general public and in particular for students and schools. Every year 700,000 visitors pass through here, 75,000 of whom are students from schools across the country, and education is an essential tool for LZ to achieve its objectives in the area of biodiversity conservation. Promoting education, especially civic and environmental education, is the objective inherent in the Educational Project of the LZ Pedagogical Center.
